James Talarico is the Democratic nominee in the 2026 Texas U.S. Senate race. He will face Republican Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general, who won his party's primary runoff against Sen. John Cornyn after President Trump's endorsement. [1]

Israel and AIPAC
Reported statements and pledge
Talarico has pledged not to accept support from AIPAC—or from J Street—in his Senate campaign. Jewish Insider reported in January 2026 that he has said he supports banning some weapons sales to Israel, has accused Israel of war crimes, and has described refusing to be "complicit in the death and destruction in Gaza." Context the pledge does not erase
The same reporting documents that Talarico attended an AIPAC event in 2019 and that his earlier statehouse campaigns received support from a super PAC funded by prominent pro-Israel Republican donor Miriam Adelson. A current pledge and a past record can both be true; voters can weigh both. [2]
The careful summary: he now publicly disavows AIPAC funding, and the documented past includes contact with AIPAC-adjacent donors and events. Neither fact alone settles what he would do with a Senate vote on foreign policy.
Abortion
Candidate position
Talarico's campaign platform proposes restoring reproductive freedom with federal legislation to codify Roe v. Wade and protecting access to contraception and IVF. [4] [5]
Reported statements
In interviews he has framed the position through his Christian faith, saying abortion decisions are not "a place for politicians" or "a place for the state," and criticizing the Texas ban for having no exception for rape or incest. [6]
Guns
Candidate position
His campaign says it supports the Second Amendment while proposing universal background checks for gun sales, prioritized prosecution of firearms traffickers, secure-storage requirements for firearms around children, and a higher purchase age for semi-automatic rifles with certain military-style features like high-capacity magazines. The campaign also cites his opposition to permitless carry in the Texas House. [3]

Is Talarico progressive?
Interpretation, labeled as such
Labels are shortcuts, and this project does not referee them. The Texas Tribune has described his public faith message as a "progressive take on Christianity." [7] His platform mixes positions usually called progressive—codifying Roe, Medicare buy-in, higher taxes on corporations and wealthy households—with positions less easily labeled, like border-enforcement spending paired with legal pathways. Money, donations, and funding
Candidate position
Talarico campaigns against corporate PAC and super PAC money in politics and says his campaign refuses corporate PAC contributions. [10]
Official record and outside reporting
Official FEC records show his receipts, spending, and cash on hand, and change with each filing period. [9] The Texas Tribune has reported that a legally independent super PAC supported by billionaires and groups that do not disclose all donors has spent to support him; his campaign says it does not coordinate with that group. Holding both facts together is the honest reading: an anti-big-money message, and big outside money in the race anyway. Neither cancels the other, and neither is proof of a corrupt favor.
